Brisbane, 25th August 2008. Australia is known for its colourful laidback lifestyle. So does this trend extend to its commercial furniture? In recent years while there has been an increase in the use of bold colours such as brilliant reds and startling lime greens for many commercial sofas, the number one top selling commercial furniture colour in Brisbane for the past 5 years is beige (although you probably won't hear it called beige – it will be a shade of biscotti, latte or milk chocolate).

"Architects and project designers are looking for something stylish, that won't date and can be jazzed up with colourful accessories" said Jeanette Simpson from MLD furniture. "For that reason they tend to go with neutrals of the beige palette, as well as slate tonings for maximum flexibility. Trendy coloured commercial sofas look great but they can rapidly date a development, so designers tend to stay with the core earthy colour range."

"The greatest shift we have seen in commercial sofas in recent times is in the fabrics. Gone are the heavy slub fabrics or suedes. The latest trends for commercial furniture Australia are towards cool linen fabrics, with visible stitching detail. This seems to be where the laid back lifestyle is being displayed."

"The other place is in the design configuration of the commercial sofas. While law offices still prefer the look of traditional commercial leather sofas, other businesses have moved towards modular L-shaped commercial sofas, with a preference towards imported contemporary furniture," said Jeanette.

Commercial furniture needs to be functional and sturdy to stand the wear and tear of constant use, which means it is very likely that during their next revamp your favourite motel or office will once again select beige as its colour of choice.
