LED Signs and Display Systems

The main advantages of LED Display Systems and LED signs is that they have a very low power consumption (10 W to 22 W) and an extended lifespan as high as seven to ten years. When compared with typical energy needs of an incandescent bulb, which is 135 watts, the saving resulting from the low energy usage of LED signals can be as high as 93% .

In addition to the low energy usage, the lifespan of LED's mean low maintenance costs. LED Signs have become an efficient alternative to traditional displays luminous bulbs. Unlike an incandescent bulb which has only one filament, an LED Display Systems  is made out of a matrix of several LEDs. The sign continues to function even if several of these miniature diodes stop working. On the other hand, when the filament of an incandescent bulb fails, the display goes dark requiring immediate replacement.

LED signals are brighter compared to incandescent display systems , which enhances intersection safety. For instance,Incandescent traffic signals use reflectors behind the bulbs. For  signs or signals on east-west approaches during morning and evening hours, all colours can give an apparent colour blend when the sun fall directly on these signals. This problem is eliminated when LED signals are used because there are no reflectors in LED signals.

The reliability which LEDs have is partly due to the design, which implements semiconductor technology. This means that semiconductor material is used to emit light, and there are no flimsy filaments to fail, as in incandescent bulbs. Also the LED traffic signals are implemented with many LEDs, so if one of the LEDs fails within the unit, the unit still works.

LED  signs and display are longer lasting and more efficient whilst focussing the light better. This makes them easier to see both in day and night.
