Advice on vaccination programs for feedlot cattle

Feeder Guard™ is a preinduction vaccination protocol to better prepare the cattle’s immune response to respiratory disease challenge at the feedlot.

Feeder Guard™ is the first auditable preinduction Bovine Vaccine protocol on off er for the Australian Feedlot Industry. This type of protocol has been available in the USA for many years and Feeder Guard™ has looked at the strengths and opportunities to improve and develop Feeder Guard™ to better fi ll the needs of the Australian grain fed beef industry.

Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) is the greatest cause of illness to the Australian Feedlot Industry. Feeder Guard™ has the potential to reduce BRD, lower the total use of antibiotics, improve performance and enhance the profi t to the feedlotting industry.

Feeder Guard™ is a fully audited protocol, where the grazier is invited to join protocol by the feedlot and off ered an incentive payment to follow protocol. The grazier has to undergo vaccine handling, administration and storage training, use vaccines according to protocol, maintain all records and be prepared to undergo an audit by Aus Meat to ensure the integrity of the protocol.

It is anticipated that cattle prepared under the Feeder Guard™ protocol would attract a price premium payable by the feedlot. In excess of 60,000 head have been treated

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the most common and costly beef cattle disease in the Australia.Research in the United States showed that the economic loss associated with lower gains and treatment cost for BRD infection in a 1,000 head feedlot was $13.90 per animal, not including labor and associated handling costs.
